"Les Cafes Verlet"

When you study art you start with drawing.

You cannot proceed with any area of art until you master the skill of drawing.

     Charles Dwyer has mastered drawing and painting the female figure. Skilled as he is in many areas of the creative process. Dwyer admits that drawing remains closest to his heart "Drawing is the foundation of everything. It's kind of primal." He continues to say "I keep my work partly in traditional drawing, and then allow the work to become funky, I don't want the work to be too serious... I want to create a look that is inviting or provocative. I like the magical, and fantasy aspect."

Dwyer's most recent works, Moulin Rouge Studies, are inspired by Mario Marini's etchings and the Russian costume designer, Leon Bakst. Those who view Dwyer's art are captivated by the combination of the female form with auto-biographical elements or hidden images. In many of his works, Dwyer creates images with both literal and figurative layers. Dwyer feels that overly planned works become boring. This series is spontaneous, expressive. They contain narrative phrases and images that invite the viewer into interpretation.

     In addition to his own art, Dwyer has been involved with a decorative art and restoration studio where he has worked extensively in the field of restoration of historical landmarks. His restoration works include the dome in the cathedral of Notre Dame University and murals at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC. These projects include work on paintings, murals, stained glass, bronze & mosaics. However, his real love remains his own work!
As the artist once noted, I desire to create art that is at once visually exciting and thought- provoking.

      Charles Dwyer is a Wisconsin native, and graduated Valedictorian from the Milwaukee School of Art & Design in 1984. Charles earned early recognition of his work at an exhibition in 1985 at the West Bend Art Museum, outside Milwaukee. In 1992 his first exhibition in NYC, at the NY Art Expo, sold out! This was followed by futher success at the 1993 Art Expo Chicago. Subsequently his work was shown at every NY Art Expo from 1994-2004.
