A Retrospective of Posters 1940-1964 In the life of Hans Falk all impressions are intense. Considered one of Switzerland's finest poster artists, his insightful style & warm expressive palette have won him many honors in Switzerland and beyond. In the 1940's & 1950's Hans Falk created his multi color lithographic posters on stone, and supervised all aspects of their printing. Like Theophile Steinlen, many of his posters offer social comment on the plight of the elderly, the disadvantaged, the laborer, or the handicapped. But there are also many outstanding works dealing with sports, commerce and travel. Whatever Hans Falk drew or painted, it was something he "saw himself". This also refers to the poster "Knie". During his visits to the Knie circus in Rapperswil, he acquainted himself with the reactions and movements of the animals and their trainers. Hans Falk's posters have contributed to the fact that, for a long time already, posters have attained a permanent place in art museums, galleries and private collections. Almost all of his posters, 58 produced between 1942 -1964, were made for art competitions. He trusted the jurors to understand his artistic intentions more than the commercial aims of his commissions. 31 of Falk's posters were awarded 1st prize in competition, and 26 earned the honor of "Best Poster" from the Swiss government. After spending a dozen years in New York, Falk returned to Switzerland. From 1988 through 2002 he lived and painted and maintained a home in Stromboli, Italy and a studio in Zurich. |
