J. C. Heywood

Macrocosm

J.C. Heywood, was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1941. He completed his studies at the Ontario College of Art in 1963 and from 1967- 1969 worked at Atelier 17 in Paris with S. W. Hayter.

Heywood has been a Professor of printmaking at Queen's University in Canada since 1974, but continues to travel and has, over the years, worked at print studios in England, France, Germany, Japan and India, drawing on a diverse and rich range of artistic experiences.

During that time Heywood has produced a major body of work in all the major print media: serigraphy, lithography and etching and is widely recognized as one of Canada's pre- eminent artists/ printmakers. His work has received numerous awards in North America and abroad and is represented in many major museum collections.

Heywood's most recent serigraphs takes advantage of the possibilities opened up by the new water-based ultra-violet ink techniques. These inks are cured not by the evaporation of solvents like traditional screen-printing inks, but by exposure to UV light. The finesse and sensitivity of this new process has enabled the artist to create denser, more compact compositions with very fine tonal gradations.

Heywood's work explores the interplay between image and memory, and brings together many strands about color and energy, texture and meaning.

Selected Public Collections: The Albertina Museum, Vienna, Biblioteque National de France, Biblioteque National de Belgique, The Brooklyn Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum, New York, Montreal Museum of Fine Art, Musee d' Art Contemporain, Montreal, Musee d' Art Moderne, Paris, Museum of Modern Art, Poland, New York Public Library, Seattle Art Museum, The Victoria & Albert Museum, London, to name a few.
